ABOUT ME
HOW DID IT START?
Simply put, it started before I knew it had begun. This Barbados-baked yet Brooklyn-bred writer’s mother always says, Barbadian accent and all, “Life is simply a string of moments: some big, others small.” And one of those larger-than-life moments came in the spring of 2003…
THE DAWSON'S CREEK SERIES FINALE.
The show had already consumed my life, and if I had a dollar for every time I nearly broke my foot sprinting through the house because “I Don’t Want To Wait” crescendoed from the television, I would be rather well off. But it wasn’t until the finale that I fully understood the power of a storyteller because…
THAT ENDING RUINED ME.
And after a downpour of tears over these fictional characters (no, they WERE real, dammit), I got myself up and wondered if I could CHANGE how the story ended.
And the only way to do that was to WRITE...
I found a website online: “Dawson’s Creek: Virtual Season 7,” and together with other writers from around the world, I collaborated to find an alternative ending. It was a fun project whose results came from a myriad of voices, and a project that I couldn't even begin to understand the significance of at that time. To this day, that ending... is my ending, and it gave me the closure I needed. It was then I realized not only the influence storytellers have, but the ability I also had.
This project ushered me to my dream of becoming a TELEVISION WRITER.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Along with DAWSON’S CREEK, the other show that was like air itself growing up was BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and then SUPERNATURAL came along.
It was the teen angst and psychological exploration of Joey Potter's and Pacey's identities, the female empowerment of Buffy and Willow, and the dramatizing of American urban legends that formed my voice and style as a writer.
So I packed my bags, left Brooklyn, and moved to Vancouver, Canada for a year on full scholarship to the Vancouver Film School where I wrote shorts, features, comics, sketches, and teleplays, including a spec for FRINGE. And that FRINGE spec charted my course to Los Angeles where I was admitted into the Guy Hanks and Marvin Miller Screenwriting Program at USC.
AND NOW…
... here I am in Los Angeles, writing, getting some traction, and plodding the path to becoming a staffed TV writer as I continue to write my passion – using magical surrealism and the supernatural to explore the psyche. Repped by Brandy Rivers at Industry Entertainment, I am excited to see what's around the bend.
So... what’s next? Who knows... Maybe you do. Give me a shout.
